ICYMI: Congresswoman Haley Stevens Moves to Rein in ICE After Trump’s ICE Kills Americans
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In case you missed it, Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens is backing legislation to redirect billions from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to local law enforcement following recent deadly actions by ICE agents under the Trump administration. Citing a pattern of abuse, lawlessness, and federal overreach that has endangered public safety, Rep. Stevens is supporting H.R. 7163, which would use the nearly $75 billion ICE received from the One Big Beautiful Bill to instead hire and train 200,000 local law enforcement officers nationwide.
Here’s what Michiganders are seeing and reading about Rep. Haley Stevens standing up to Trump’s ICE after deadly enforcement failures and pushing for real accountability:
Deadline Detroit: Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens Co-Sponsors Bill to Divert ICE's $75 Billion 'Slush Fund'
By: Allan Lengel
- Democratic U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens announced Sunday that she is co-sponsoring proposed legislation to divert ICE’s $75 billion slush fund — a supplement to the agency’s budget included in last year’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
- Under the proposed bill, the $75 billion would be redirected to state and local law enforcement agencies.
- The announcement comes one day after Border Patrol agents fatally shot protester Alex Pretti in Minneapolis on Saturday, triggering a firestorm and accusations that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was lying about the circumstances and covering up for the agents.
- “Donald Trump’s ICE is out of control — this situation requires real reform and real accountability. Trump’s ICE agents have now killed two American citizens in broad daylight, and they are putting more Americans in danger every single day,” Stevens said in a statement. “Not one penny more should go to ICE.”
- The bill calls for hiring and training an estimated 200,000 local police officers across the nation to “proven law enforcement personnel who have real ties to the communities they serve.”
- “Kristi Noem must be impeached,” Stevens said. “It’s past time for Donald Trump to listen to state and local officials and call off his lawless federal agents. We’ve heard today from law enforcement leaders in Minnesota who want to keep their communities safe but are being blocked from accessing evidence and information about these crimes.”
