A battery recycling company operating in this small Michigan city near Detroit is in the crosshairs of the Trump administration's cost-cutting review, something the area's Democratic House member says could backfire.
During a visit last week, Rep. Haley Stevens questioned why the Department of Energy continues to review a $200 million grant Cirba Solutions was awarded last year to build a lithium-ion recycling facility in South Carolina.
"It's the letter of the law that needs to be lived up to in regard to federal grants and promises that were made," Stevens said. "And why would we be throwing the baby out with the bathwater in terms of being able to compete."
Stevens — a member of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party[...] toured Cirba's Michigan plant as part of her ongoing visits to manufacturers across the state.
Stevens said the focus should also be on recycling and sustainability, and supporting companies like Cirba.
She also pointed to her "Unearth America's Future Act," H.R. 4350, which would set aside up to $10 billion for federal loans and tax credits for domestic processing and refining of minerals like copper, magnesium and cobalt.
“I'm going to be talking about my legislation till I'm blue in the face,” said Stevens.
