Rep. Stevens DC 3-Week Update
Dear Friend,
We have had a busy 3-weeks back in Washington! Here’s how we fought for Michigan's 11th District:
Week 1:
Representative Pfluger and I sent a bipartisan & bicameral letter to President Biden ahead of his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin urging him to address the arrest and detention of my constituent Paul Whelan, and his constituent Trevor Reed. Read the letter and release here.
I worked with the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology to pass the National Science Foundation for the Future Act through the committee and to the House floor, legislation that I was proud to co-lead that will make historic investments in American research, innovation and science for future generations to come.
I voted to designate Juneteenth as a federal holiday, voted to repeal the 2002 Iraq AUMF to stop endless war, and I voted to award the Capitol Police Officers and other law enforcement officials who bravely defended the Capitol on January 6th with Congressional Gold Medals.
Week 2:
I chaired a Research and Technology Subcommittee hearing on my bill, The Plastic Waste Reduction and Recycling Research Act. This legislation would increase federal investments in plastic waste reduction, recycling R&D, and recycling standards development to address our nations plastic waste crisis. Read the press release here.
During an Education and Labor Committee hearing, I questioned Education Secretary Cardona on what is being done to address the missed learning opportunities for technical education and CTE during the pandemic in state and local areas.
I voted yes on 3 bipartisan bills that passed the House. The Protecting Older Workers Against Discrimination Act will remove barriers to workplace fairness for older workers and restore their right to fight against age discrimination; the Preventing Crimes Against Veterans Act, which will impose fines and or imprisonment for defrauding veterans; and the LGBTQ Business Equal Credit Enforcement and Investment Act, which will require financial institutions to report certain credit application data to enforce fair lending laws.
Week 3:
This week my colleagues and I passed the NSF for the Future Act and the DOE for the Future Act through the House. These important bills will ensure that we maintain our innovation and technology advantage over China and other nations, and advance scientific solutions to address our greatest challenges. Read about the bills here.
I secured the inclusion of $2 million for improvements to the Village of Milford's water system as part of the Interior, Water and Related Agencies Subcommittee spending package. This funding will help keep Milford's water safe and clean for years to come. Read the press release here.
Finally, I voted yes on the INVEST in America Act, which authorizes funding for American transportation infrastructure. I secured $18 million in funding to improve the Beck Road Corridor and I also introduced two amendments to this bill. One expands a pilot program on vehicle sensor data solutions to include technology to combat wrong way driving, in memory of the tragic deaths of the Abbas family in January 2019. The other creates a new program to improve the resilience of transportation infrastructure such as pavement materials to natural disasters and extreme weather. Read the press release here.
Stay safe and healthy. We are all in this together, and I will not stop fighting for you.
Sincerely,
Haley Stevens
Member of Congress
