CARES Act Floor Remarks as Prepared for Delivery
WASHINGTON, DC - On Friday, March 27th, Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11) delivered remarks on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives during debate on the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act). Congresswoman Stevens wore pink latex gloves as she delivered her message of gratitude for healthcare professionals.
Below are Congresswoman Stevens remarks, as prepared for delivery.
"I rise before you today – in this chamber, during this critical time in the United States of America where our country faces a battle with a pandemic, the biggest battle we have faced together in generations.
Amidst uncertainty we work to keep Americans alive by stopping the spread of COVID-19.
In these times, heroes will be made and not selected.
We are in a global pandemic.
Many Americans may perish unexpectedly and suddenly in unfair circumstances.
These are not pleasant words to hear.
Treatments and cures are needed.
They will take time.
Economic security must be guaranteed.
The outbreak of COVID-19 has spread throughout our land.
Listen to the scientists and the doctors who have spent a lifetime in this space. Listen to Dr. Fauci. This is not a moment to provide the false comforts of times passed.
We are so proud of Americans who are sacrificing so much right now.
Our students gone from their beloved classrooms and classmates.
We beam for our manufacturers who have no regular purchase orders coming in, but are looking for ways to make equipment and tools for people to stay alive in our hospitals. For all people – including our medical professionals.
I rise before you today, adorning these latex gloves – not for personal attention but to encourage you to take this disease very seriously. I rise for every American who is scared right now. I rise for everyone whose life has turned upside down.
To the families keeping their children comforted while seemingly unable to ease some of their own adult worries.
To our shop owners, all of you who comprise the currently shuttered enterprises of our neighborhoods.
For the nurses and doctors whose countless valiant acts will join the infamous halls of their servitude, sharing in their profession with those who came before you in similar times of trying medical need, wars or flus past. You will see darkness. You will be pushed. And know, our society needs you and stands by you at this time. Our country loves you.
We have taken on challenges like this before as a nation, and we will do so TOGETHER, again.
For this is the great America we believe in.
Be not afraid, My Fellow Americans. Look up and see the beauty and opportunity in nature and humanity all around you. The power in your community and with your neighbors—
Look around and see the power in yourself.
Thank you and I yield back."
