Congresswoman Haley Stevens Announces ‘No Tariffs on Groceries Act’

September 17, 2025
Bill Will Lower Cost Of Groceries By Taking On Donald Trump’s Chaotic Tariff Policy

WASHINGTON, DC – This morning, Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens announced her ‘No Tariffs on Groceries Act,’ a new bill that would lower the cost of groceries by removing the ability of the president to unilaterally put tariffs on food and other agricultural products.

Stevens' bill would directly take on Donald Trump’s reckless, shoot-by-the-hip tariff policy that has been raising prices on Michiganders for months. Just this month, Michiganders saw some of the worst inflation and highest food prices they’ve seen in years. Thanks to Donald Trump’s tariffs, costs have gone up on coffee (20.9%), beef (16.6%), eggs (10.9%), apples (9.6%), bacon (7.2%), bananas (6.6%), and oranges (5.2%).

“The one thing I hear over and over again from Michiganders is that Donald Trump’s tariffs are making everything more expensive – especially groceries. Michigan has had enough of Donald Trump’s price hikes, and I am taking on these erratic tariffs to bring relief to Michigan families,” said Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens.

This bill would:

  • Require Congress to give permission if the president proposes to put tariffs on food.

  • Stipulate that tariffs cannot go into place without a subsequent act of Congress to approve them.
