This Gun Violence Awareness Month, Rep. Stevens Doubles Down on Effort to Keep Illegal Handguns Out of the Mail

June 9, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This Gun Violence Awareness Month, Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens is doubling down on her effort to keep illegal handguns out of the mail. After introducing the Keep Illegal Handguns Out of the Mail Act, Rep. Stevens led 75 of her colleagues in urging the U.S. Postal Service to reject the Trump administration’s dangerous proposal

For nearly a hundred years, federal law generally prohibited handguns from being shipped through USPS, with narrow exceptions for licensed dealers and government entities. Now, the Trump administration has proposed a new rule to get rid of these restrictions, allowing anyone with access to a mailbox to send and receive handguns. Rep. Stevens’ Keep Illegal Handguns Out of the Mail Act would keep USPS from finalizing, implementing, or enforcing the rule. It would also prevent any similar rule from being implemented and reinforce current protections around shipping guns.

Along with introducing the legislation, Rep. Stevens has gone directly to the source, relaying the dangers of the proposed bill to David Steiner, the U.S. Postmaster General.

“Firearms remain the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 18, and handguns are the type of firearm most often used to kill law enforcement officers,” said the letter.  “At a time when our communities face a continuing gun violence crisis, the federal government should be reinforcing proven safeguards, not dismantling them.”

This letter is the latest in a series of actions by Rep. Stevens to prioritize public safety and reduce gun violence in American cities and towns.
