Washington, D.C. – In case you missed it, Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens introduced the Make Congress Drive Union-Made Act to ensure that taxpayer dollars used by Congress support Michigan auto workers and union jobs. Companion legislation was introduced in the U.S. Senate by Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin.

The “Make Congress Drive Union-Made Act” would impose restrictions on which cars they can buy or lease using their so- called Members' Representational Allowance, the funds lawmakers are given annually to spend on staff, district office leases and other expenses related to their official duties.
Rajiv Sicora, the UAW's legislative director, said in a statement to POLITICO that the legislation “would ensure that Members of Congress stand up for the union way of life in their choice of vehicle — supporting the generations of autoworkers who build not only cars, but a better economic future based on solidarity.”

Michigan lawmakers are pushing new legislation to make sure Congress drives American-made, union-made vehicles.
Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens introduced the Make Congress Drive Union- Made Act, with Senator Elissa Slotkin bringing a companion bill to the U.S. Senate.
Currently, members of Congress receive an annual budget to carry out official duties, which can be used to lease or acquire vehicles for official use.
Stevens says the bill would require Congress to spend taxpayer money only on vehicles made in America by union workers.
The United Auto Workers union endorsed the bill, calling it a stand for union jobs and Michigan values.
U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens and U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin, both Democrats from Michigan, are teaming up on a new auto bill that they say would ensure taxpayer dollars better support workers and union jobs in the U.S.
They each introduced companion legislation in the House and Senate that would require members of Congress to drive American-made vehicles. It’s called the Make Congress Drive Union-Made Act.
Right now, members of Congress receive an annual budget to carry out duties, which can be used to acquire vehicles. Currently, there is no requirement for those vehicles to be American-made or assembled by union labor.

The Make Congress Drive Union-Made Act is made up of companion legislation introduced in both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate earlier this week.
Members of Congress can currently purchase any car for official use, but Representative Stevens says the proposed legislation would change that.
“We want to see taxpayer dollars for those government vehicles being spent on union-made and American-made vehicles that support the great jobs that we have right here in Michigan. the jobs and the workers who build our auto industry.”
Stevens says she believes the legislation will see bipartisan support adding that she will continue lobbying until it passes.
