Photos & Video: Rep. Stevens Discusses Voting Rights & Democracy Reforms with Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson
LIVONIA, Mich. – On Tuesday, April 23rd, Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11) held a roundtable discussion about democracy and voting rights with Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Voters Not Politicians Executive Director Nancy Wang, and ACLU of Michigan Voting Rights Strategist Sharon Dolente. A group of AP Government students from Farmington Public Schools attended the roundtable and participated in the discussion.
A few months after Michigan voters overwhelming passed two major ballot proposals to expand access to voting and end partisan gerrymandering, this roundtable brought together some of the state’s leading experts in the field for a discussion about voting rights, gerrymandering, the progress that has been made in Michigan, and the work ahead for 2020 and beyond.
The discussion was streamed live on Congresswoman Stevens’ Facebook page. Watch the livestream HERE. Photos from the event are attached.
“I consider myself extremely lucky to hail from a district that had the tenth-highest voter turnout of all 435 Congressional Districts last fall,” said Congresswoman Haley Stevens. “My district, however, is also one of the most gerrymandered districts in the country, which divides communities and is confusing to voters. It was such an honor to be joined by this incredible group of experts today to discuss the progress we have made to strengthen voting rights and end partisan gerrymandering in Michigan, while acknowledging that there is still a lot of work ahead of us. I was also inspired to meet and answer insightful questions from a group of students from Farmington Public Schools. After meeting this extraordinary group of students, I am confident that the future of our state is in great hands.”
