Rep. Stevens Statement on Automakers’ Temporary Production Shutdown

March 18, 2020

WASHINGTONCongresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11) released the following statement after the major domestic automakers agreed to temporarily shut down all North American plants in an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19.

“As someone who worked on the 2009-2010 Auto Rescue, I strongly support our automakers for taking a responsible, necessary step to protect their workforce during this time of crisis,” said Congresswoman Stevens. “I am also well aware of the ripple effects of disruptions to our domestic auto industry, so I believe the federal government must play a central role in helping these companies and their workers weather this uncertain period. To the automakers, their incredible workforce, and the robust network of dealers and parts suppliers in Michigan's 11th District, my message is this: we will not let you fail. This is a quickly evolving crisis, and we will be prepared to help during every step of the way, both during this immediate liquidity need and in the future as we enter a recovery period.”
