Rep. Stevens Statement on her Appointment to the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party
Washington, DC– Today, Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) issued the following statement:
“Oakland County has a GDP larger than 14 American states. It is the economic engine of the Midwest, home of Automation Alley, and the heart of advanced manufacturing in this country. I tour small to midsize manufacturers in SE Michigan each week through my Manufacturing Monday program. I hear firsthand the challenges our innovators face to remain competitive globally. China’s unfair trade practices have hollowed out our manufacturing base to the detriment of American industry. This is unacceptable.
America’s overreliance on China for critical resources is a serious national security threat. Last Congress, in my role on the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, I oversaw much of the creation of the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act. This groundbreaking legislation helped to address this threat and made historic investments in America’s scientific innovation. However, it is clear that more work still needs to be done.
I am honored to use my new role on the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to advocate for our automotive suppliers, advanced manufacturers, and working families. It is time to fix our unbalanced relationship with China in a way that strengthens our economy and security.
Partnering with my colleague and fellow Midwesterner, Rep. Gallagher, to keep this undemocratic foreign government from undermining American innovation and economic security is an honor. The United States Congress stands united in our effort, and we are committed to speaking as one voice to stand up to China on behalf of American workers and businesses.
I am grateful to Minority Leader Jeffries for the opportunity to serve on this critically important committee. Let’s get to work!”
