Stevens Calls for Humanitarian Aid for Beirut

August 6, 2020

LIVONIA, MI - Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11) released the following statement after an explosion killed over 130 people in Beirut, Lebanon on Tuesday.

“On August 4th, 2020, the city of Beirut, Lebanon was devastated by a massive explosion that killed at least 130 people, injured over 5,000 more, and destroyed countless homes and businesses. In the aftermath of the blast, rescue workers continue to look for survivors while humanitarian organizations rush to help hundreds of thousands of people who become homeless in a matter of seconds.

“It will take years to repair the immense damage and suffering inflicted on Beirut this week, and the United States has a moral obligation to help the people of Lebanon recover. The United States must immediately deploy humanitarian aid to support medical care, cleanup, and economic recovery efforts.

“I stand with the people of Lebanon, and the Lebanese-American community in Michigan and across the country, during this incredibly difficult time. As loved ones look to reunite, I am here to assist Americans abroad and impacted by this explosion return home safely. Today and always I commit to being an effective partner as the people of Lebanon look to rebuild their beloved Beirut.”
