Stevens Calls on Trump Administration to Provide Immediate Tariff Relief

April 1, 2020

WASHINGTON – On Wednesday, Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11) released the following statement after reports that President Trump is considering an executive order that would give companies a 90-day grace period on paying certain tariffs.

“As the coronavirus pandemic worsens, Michigan has seen record unemployment claims and thousands of Michigan businesses are suddenly worried about having to shutter through no fault of their own,” said Congresswoman Stevens. “The federal government has quickly passed three major pieces of bipartisan legislation to address the interconnected health and economic crises we face as a nation. While the government has taken bold, drastic action to mitigate this unprecedented situation, harmful tariffs continue to cripple Michigan businesses that are already struggling.”

“According to recent news reports, President Trump is considering an executive order to allow companies to defer certain tariff payments for 90 days,” Congresswoman Stevens continued. “The President should sign the reported executive order as soon as possible, before irreversible damage is done to our manufacturing base. He should immediately work with China to expand this policy to include Section 301 tariffs imposed by the U.S. and the retaliatory tariffs imposed by China. Our manufacturers absolutely need this relief. There is no time to waste.”
