Stevens-Led Provisions Pass U.S. House of Representatives

WASHINGTON — Today, Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11) voted to pass H.R. 7617, a package of fiscal year 2021 appropriations bills. H.R. 7617 makes smart investments in our national security, clean energy economy, small businesses, and infrastructure among other key priorities.
“This appropriations package makes important investments that will help families and communities in Michigan’s 11th District as we address the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting economic crisis,” said Congresswoman Stevens. “These programs will use taxpayer dollars responsibly to improve our infrastructure, prioritize public health, invest in education and job training, combat climate change, and expand opportunity for all. I am glad that my amendments passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan supportto champion drowning prevention, STEM education, COVID-19 research, aerospace manufacturing, and hypersonics research. These amendments are all critical to our regional success in Michigan’s 11th District.”
The “Minibus” package that passed the House of Representatives included several Stevens-led amendments:
Championing drowning prevention efforts. Rep. Stevens led an amendment to highlight the need to fund drowning prevention work through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Rep. Stevens spoke on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives about this amendment.
Supporting hypersonics and thermal management research. Rep. Stevens led a bipartisan amendment to support research and development in hypersonics and thermal management in the Manufacturing USA Institutes, including the Michigan-based Lightweight Innovations for Tomorrow (LIFT).
Promoting domestic development of aerospace composites. Rep. Stevens led an amendment to encourage NASA to support the domestic development of lower cost, higher rate production advanced composite structures for use in aerospace manufacturing to meet the requirements of subsonic and hypersonic flight.
Encouraging the National Science Foundation to continue COVID-19 related research. As Chairwoman of the House Science Subcommittee on Research and Technology, Rep. Stevens led an amendment to highlight the National Science Foundation’s work to research COVID-19, and to encourage continued federal support of those important efforts.
Promote the National Science Foundation’s STEM education programs. Rep. Stevens, Co-Founder of the Congressional Women in STEM Caucus and author of a bipartisan STEM education bill that was signed into law last year, led an amendment to highlight the National Science Foundation’s work with K-12 STEM education programs, and to encourage continued federal support for those key programs.
