Stevens Statement on House Passage of Third Coronavirus Package
WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11) made the following statement after voting to pass the CARES Act, the third phase of the federal response to the Coronavirus pandemic.
The CARES Act will provide nearly $4 billion to help Michigan, which now has more confirmed cases of COVID-19 than all but four states.
“The coronavirus pandemic is an unprecedented crisis in the modern era, and Michigan families are worried sick about the health and safety of their loved ones,” said Congresswoman Stevens. “At the same time, we have seen a record number of Michiganders apply for unemployment benefits last week, and I fear the economic ramifications are far from over. The CARES Act addresses a lot of our needs right now. I am also so pleased that this bill will not only support the health and wellbeing of people, but also our automotive industry and small and mid-sized manufacturers who will be able to access key services through the Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP). In the coming weeks, I will do everything I can to help my constituents access the critical resources included in this legislation, while beginning to work on phase four of our response to this pandemic.”
Congresswoman Stevens is the Chairwoman of the House Science Subcommittee on Research and Technology, which oversees the National Institute of Standards and Technology and its various programs including the Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP). The CARES Act provides for $50 million in additional funding for the MEP.
