Stevens Votes to Protect U.S. Postal Service

August 22, 2020

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11) released the following statement after voting to pass the Delivering for America Act, legislation to prohibit the United States Postal Service (USPS) from implementing changes to levels of service and to provide critical funding for continued postal operations. The legislation also provides $25 billion in critically-needed emergency appropriations for the Postal Service, the level of funding recommended by the USPS Board of Governors

“In light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the USPS’ role in serving the American people is more important than ever. Michigan families and businesses rely on the mail to pay their bills, receive their prescription medications, ship to their customers, and participate in our democracy by voting safely by mail.”

“In recent weeks, Postmaster General DeJoy has implemented unprecedented changes to the operations and organizational structure of the USPS, including the prohibition of letter carriers from taking overtime and making extra trips to deliver mail on time. These changes, compounded by the delays already resulting from the coronavirus pandemic, threaten the success of our constitutionally enshrined postal services. A global health crisis is certainly no time to enact changes that jeopardize service reliability and government transparency.”

“I was proud to cosponsor and vote to pass the Delivering for America Act, legislation to reverse the recent obstructive service changes at the Postal Service and provide emergency funding to support timely deliveries and restore institutional stability to the USPS. This legislation will help rebuild American confidence in this fundamental democratic service. We cannot tolerate anything less than full faith in our American institutions that support our basic needs.”
