TAYLOR, Mich. (WXYZ) — As you do your holiday shopping, you’ll notice more shortages than ever of high tech items that require microchips. It is hitting all economic sectors in one way or another.

Chips were invented in the U.S. But now, only 12% are made here. Of the more sophisticated chips, 0% are made in the USA. Those are made in Taiwan and China.

The Detroit Big Three automakers have been forced to slow or stop production. The industry will lose out on making and selling 1.2 million vehicles this year, costing $210 billion.

Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) introduced the Increasing Developing Entrepreneurship Access (IDEA) Act of 2021. This legislation will create a grant program to develop a network of business accelerators that promote growth for minority-owned businesses through enhanced access to capital, business networks and supply chains. The IDEA Act of 2021 would appropriate $25,000,000 for each fiscal year through 2026.

James Kuhl, producing artistic director for Northville’s Tipping Point Theatre, said he’s beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel as vaccinations increase, but admitted the pandemic has posed as a big challenge to the theatre and many other live performance venues and cultural institutions across Michigan that have yet to reopen.

She was joined by United States Representative Haley Stevens (D-MI 11^th district). 

News of Carl Levin’s death spread fast across Michigan with friends, colleagues, and even some political foes paying their respects to one of Michigan’s iconic public servants.

On Thursday, Levin, a Detroit native and Michigan’s longest-serving U.S. senator, died following a four-year battle with lung cancer that he made public in March. He was 87 years old.

Members of Congress are continuing to call for the release of Americans wrongfully detained in Russian prisons.

Livonia wants to relocate and rebuild its senior center without going before voters with a tax request. It appears on track to do that.

Congresswoman Haley Stevens (D-MI-11) appears to have secured $3 million in federal funding for the project. The U.S. Senate still needs to approve the funding, which is part of community funding each member of congress can lobby for. Stevens' office is optimistic the funding will be approved and get dispersed next year.
