The House of Representatives voted on May 11 to approve H.R. 847 – the Promoting Digital Privacy Technologies Act, by a margin of 401-19.

The legislation introduced last year by Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., would “direct the National Science Foundation to support merit-reviewed and competitively awarded research on privacy enhancing technologies.”

The Promoting Digital Privacy Technologies Act, supports research, workforce development, standard setting, and government coordination for the development of privacy enhancing technologies (PETs).

Rep. Haley Stevens is one of the 81 members of the House chosen as a conferee to reconcile the chambers’ respective China-competition bills. As the chair of the House Science Research and Technology Subcommittee, Stevens has played a major role in putting together several parts of the America COMPETES Act. Stevens, a Michigan Democrat, spoke with Philip Athey about the upcoming conference. This conversation has been edited for length and clarity.

Washington, DC– Today, Rep. Haley Stevens’ (MI-II) resolution, HRes 336, calling for the release of her wrongfully detained constituent, Paul Whelan, of Novi, unanimously passed the House. This bipartisan resolution has 21 Democratic cosponsors and 20 Republican cosponsors.

The U.S. House unanimously passed a resolution Wednesday calling on Russia to release Paul Whelan, a Novi resident who has been locked up since December 2018 on espionage charges.

Whelan, a former U.S. Marine, has repeatedly maintained his innocence.

He was sentenced to 16 years in prison during a June 2020 trial that American officials have called unfair.

Washington — After the Grand Rapids police killing of Patrick Lyoya, Michigan U.S. Rep. Brenda Lawrence is introducing a bill to boost training for police departments to better monitor body-worn camera footage.

The legislation by the Southfield Democrat would create a pilot program to fund training for local law enforcement departments to cover personnel costs to review body-worn camera footage on a continuing basis to improve officer conduct and safety, according to a bill summary.
