WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Paul Whelan, along with Americans Evan Gershkovich and Alsu Kurmasheva and U.S. green card holder, Vladimir Kara-Murza, were released from wrongful detention in Russia. 

Whelan, a security executive from Novi, MI, was sentenced to 16 years in prison on false charges of espionage. He has been detained for more than 2,000 days.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last Friday, U.S. Representatives Haley Stevens (D-MI) and U.S. Representative Jay Obernolte (R-CA) introduced the Expanding Partnerships for Innovation and Competitiveness (EPIC) Act. This legislation would establish a Foundation for Standards and Metrology (FSM) to support the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in their critical work advancing measurement science, standards, and technological development.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, as part of the reauthorization of the Federal Aviation Administration, the FAA Severe Turbulence Research & Development Act, introduced by U.S. Representative Haley Stevens (D-MI), passed the House. The legislation, already passed by the Senate, is expected to be signed into law by the President later this week. 

The legislation directs the FAA to research and mitigate the effects of severe turbulence.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last night, U.S. Representatives Haley Stevens (D-MI) and U.S. Representative Dave Joyce (R-OH) introduced the Stop Nurse Shortages Act. The bill would create a grant program to help nursing schools create, expand, or support accelerated nursing degree programs, which are geared towards training those with an undergraduate degree in another field as nurses at an accelerated pace.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Haley Stevens (D-MI) introduced the Healthy Affordable Housing Act to address the dire shortage of safe, affordable housing units for American families.

The U.S. is currently in need of 7.3 million additional affordable housing units for families most in need. The State of Michigan has 190,000 fewer affordable rental homes than needed by this population and 28% of Michigan families pay more than 30% of their income in rent each month.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Privacy Enhancing Technology Research Act, 354 to 36. Privacy enhancing technologies (PETs) are a broad range of technologies that allow organizations to collect, share, and use data while mitigating the privacy risks that arise from those activities.
